Digital cameras, also called digicams, are cameras capable of taking still photographs, video, or both. They digitally record images using an electronic image sensor. Most of the electronics being developed today are digital and digicams are the main device used in the digital photography industry.
A digital camera can do things that a film camera cannot. They display images on a screen that are available immediately after being captured. They can record and store large amounts of images by way of memory devices such as memory cards. Furthermore, they allow for images to be deleted. This frees up storage space on the camera or memory card. Most digicams are able to record video with sound and some are so advanced that they have built-in GPS systems and allow for in-camera photography editing.
These devices share the same optical system with film cameras. A lens, with a variable diaphragm, focuses light. That light is focused on a image pickup device, this happens electronically with digital devices and chemically with film devices. These digicams are now being equipped in vehicles, mobile hones, astronomical devices and PDAs.
There are many types: mirrorless interchangeable-lens, rangefinders, line-scan, digital single lens reflex, bridge, and compact. Compact cams are given their name because they are small in size and portable. They are often used for quick snapshots, hence there nickname of point-and-shoot cameras. Bridge cameras are usually higher end and resemble DSLRs, digital single lens reflex cameras, but have a fixed lens and small sensor.
Most of these electronics are battery-powered. The size and type of the battery depends on the model. Generally compact units can run off of standard AA batteries. DSLRs require more battery power and usually come with a battery that has a charger. Digicams connect to a computer device to transfer images. This may be done in many ways: using a USB cord, multimedia messaging, card readers, or a wireless connection. This transfer usually takes little to no time. Individuals have the option of uploading all or some of their photos for editing, sharing or printing purposes.
The photos produced from these devices can also be printed. There are some special photography printers available, images can be loaded onto a memory card that is taken to a kiosk in a store, or images can be downloaded to the website of a store that processes photography. The photos may also be displayed on a television through video output ports included on most digicams.
There are many modes that these devices have. Photos can be taken using preset modes or owners can alter white balance, aperture, focus, exposure and other settings. Most of digicams use memory cards that have flash memory to store their image data. Depending on the settings and the camera, these cards can hold up to thousands of photos. Digital cameras are a modern way to shoot photography and video. These electronics come in many sizes and with varying functions. Generally, they are regarded as more affordable and convenient than film.
