Audio post production is a very important part of film making and is the process in which soundtracks are created for moving images. From the time the first soundtrack was developed, filmmakers have been constantly trying to tackle the various problems to rectify and control sound quality on moving images.

The concept of audio post production was born out of this growing need. Today, audio post production procedure plays a very important role in enhancing the sound quality of both television and movie production. The need for the audio post production process has grown manifold with the involvement of TV into broader categories like videotaping and filmed programming.

The process of audio post production involves multiple steps; depending on the type of project either a few steps or all of the steps can be used. Some of the key stages of this procedure include re-recording, music composition, Foley editing and mixing, production dialogue editing and automated replacement of dialogue.

Typically, audio post production procedure includes a variety of sub-mixes and tracks. Sound editors in charge of video and motion pictures usually develop a combination of signals derived from similar busses and tracks and convert these into stem mixes or sub-mixes. Combining these sub-mixes then develops the final mix.

Editing of production dialogue involves making the location of all the takes in which the Picture Editor is used. It also involves making sure that the audio is able to work properly. This is known as sync checking. It is also at this stage that any noise that is extraneous is eliminated so that the mixer of the dialogue can clear dialogue, which is then later used in the mix.

Replacement of dialogue that is automated involves streamlining an audio production that had a lot of noise in it and thus could not be used. At this stage, you will be able to record while at the same time you will be able to edit. You are also able to make matches incase there is a problem.

Assembling and editing are the other two steps involved in audio post production to ensure that the final project is perfect. The most crucial step in the entire process of audio post production is the mixing stage where the different elements of sound and music and blended in a balanced manner thus ensuring that the final project is nothing but the best. Dialogue, music and effects mixers work in close unison to achieve this and thus the final project is created which is either digital or optical in format.
