Comfortable Fit is More Important than Sound
Without sounding too impressed with myself I want to assert that I know a lot about headphones. I have gone through multiple brands and tested many models from each. After all my searching for the perfect headphones I have both discovered what makes the ideal headphones as well as why some fashionable designs will never work.
If you are planning on buying headphones online ensure you go to a store first and try some on. The fit is the most important part of your headphones and it is not a terrible concept to test the sound while you are at it. Please don’t be one of the trendy iPod headphones users who still use the white ear buds that come with the iPod. The iPod is over a decade old and they still use those terrible ear buds. They do not fit anyone’s ears and continually fall out.
Headphone companies that target the quality of the sound usually are not the best solution. I do not care how good your headphones sound if they’re uncomfortable and fall off every fifteen seconds. Even ear bud manufacturers brag about the quality of the small speakers and amplifiers they use but it really doesn’t make any difference and here is why. 99% of headphones users are listening to an iPod, iPhone or some other small digital lightweight gadget which has compressed the music to fit on it.
Generally speaking iPod mp3 sound is not that good because it has been compressed but 99% of the population can’t notice the difference. In a home theatre setting with blueray discs or using hi fi installers I admit it is easy to hear the difference in sound quality but this isn’t as true with headphones. Even DVDs compress the sound to fit a giant video file on 4 GB.
Some people prefer over the ear headphones and some prefer earphone buds. Personally I believe both have their advantages and disadvantages. If you are flying on an airplane or traveling in a motionless position I advise using over the ear headphones. Sound cancelling headphones are the greatest satisfaction but ensure they are comfy as even gigantic pricey headphones can pinch ears and become uncomfortable in time. If you are moving around a lot than ear buds are the wiser choice. I used to compete in skiing and ear buds always worked for me but when I travelled between contests I would not survive without my noise cancelling over the ear headphones.
