Due to their electrostatic nature, electronics are a dust magnet. Without regular cleaning, they can eventually deteriorate and bog down after a while. But that shouldn’t make you worry, because cleaning electronics is a breeze. Here’s how to go about it:

Before you start, check the user manual. This usually contains vital information on how to clean certain equipment. Follow these instructions carefully. Inspect the labels on the equipment for hints on how to open something. Certain items like microwave ovens, water purifiers and refrigerators, however, require a qualified technician to be opened. Don’t open up mobile phones, clocks with electronic displays and personal organizers as this may void the warranty.

Unplug the equipment before attempting to clean it and remove cables linking it to other devices. Place the equipment on a table or flat area that isn’t difficult to reach. The place should be clean and dry. Check the power cord for existing cuts or abrasions. If you find any, replace the cord or get help from an electrician. Ignoring the problem is a big mistake – you could get an electric shock or your equipment may incur a lot of damage.

Get hold of an electrostatic cloth, a micro fiber cloth or a soft damp cloth and clean the equipment from top to bottom. For nooks and crevices in your equipment, a mini-vacuum cleaner or blower is best. Dirty CDs or DVDs with fingerprints can be cleaned with a little isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth. Wipe outwards from the center of the CD or DVD. Avoid hard rubbing or wiping in a circular motion. Does your mini-component or DVD player skip while playing, freeze or say “No Disc” even with a disc loaded? The problem may be caused by a dirty lens. This is the reason why it can’t read the disc. Just buy a cleaning disc from a nearby electronics shop and run it in the player to restore its function.

To clean a LCD TV or computer monitor screen, get a soft damp cloth. Disconnect the plug and wipe gently across the screen. Don’t forget the ventilation area and the base. Your computer has to cleaned too. Remove the computer case by loosening the screws on the sides. Use a can of compressed air to blow dust and debris away. Begin at the power supply going to the rear ventilation fan. Finally, dust the motherboard, component slots and case.
