Everyone has a digital camera these days. Though it is considered to be durable, they can have problems. Although there are some problems that do necessitate the use of a professional camera repair center, there are some general maintenance tips individuals can use to avoid larger problems. Do not touch LCD camera screens with fingers. The natural oils produced by the skin are difficult to wipe off. Not only that, but the oil can cause damage to the camera.

As common with many other electronics, liquids should not be placed in close proximity to digital cameras. Unless the digital camera is specifically designed for underwater use and is therefore protected, liquids can cause serious harm to digital cameras and may even break them completely. When cleaning, as well, do not use water or cleaning fluids. The excessive liquid may not only cause damage, but there may be chemicals in the cleaner that will damage the camera. If an individual is touring, they will always have a digital camera on them. But when not touring, it is advised to store digital cameras in safe places. This includes not putting them near other, larger electronics as the magnetic field that is given off can cause damage to the digital camera.

Store all digital cameras in a well-ventilated location. To avoid the possibility of mildew forming, put cameras in specialized camera bags or even a plastic ziplock bag. When not in use for a long period of time, it is beneficial to turn it on at least once a month for a few minutes.

Digital cameras were not made to endure a number of extreme environmental conditions. Therefore, they should not be left in very hot locations, such as by a window or in a parked car. They should also not be left in very cold temperatures as it can harm especially the LCD screen.

Lastly, if digital cameras are not used for a week or longer, it is suggested that the battery be removed and stored separate from the camera. If the digital camera comes equipped with an extendable lens, it should be fully retracted before it is stored.
